Do You Hear What I Hear?
/Los Angeles, 2013
Litter blows across the city street, a young man hands the pretty young girl a flyer --"Abortion $325" -- she's pregnant, scared for the future, and the wind is blowing cold.
Then the wind seems to whisper, "Do you hear what I hear?"
She leans in towards the faint sound. Are people singing? Again she hears, "Do you hear what I hear? A song, a song, high above the trees with a voice as big as the sea, with a voice as big as the sea."
It is people singing...How can that be?
She is in the Los Angeles pit of despair: one square mile of downtown teems with purveyors of death. Indeed, there are ten abortion mills here waiting to strip her womb of the child within.
Nobody knows, but that is why she is here, she just can't be pregnant now. It is Christmas, and an announcement of her pregnancy out of wedlock would ruin the holiday for her family. Her family is a good family and she is a good girl.
Again, fear and shame rush over her and she looks again at the flyer she clutches in her hand.
Abortion $325.
The singing is even closer now; they are singing Christmas carols, how very strange.
Then the wind whips again but as it does, the singers' words are indeed a voice as big as the sea and she hears, "A child, a child, shivers in the cold, let us bring Him silver and gold, let us bring him silver and gold."
As the words penetrate her heart, she places her hand on her tummy and whispers in a voice so faint only God and the angels can hear; a child, a child, shivers in the cold; she pulls her jacket closed, turns into the wind, walks past the carolers, and heads toward home.
